A practical bibliography audit

Catch suspicious citations
before they travel.

Paste a reference list. We search Crossref and compare each citation with published metadata. A weak match means “review this,” not “fabricated.”

How to tune the checker

The score is a ranking aid, not a probability that a citation is real. Start with the defaults. Raise the verified threshold when false matches are costly; lower it when citations are old, inconsistently formatted, or likely to have sparse metadata.

Default interpretation 82–100: likely match 62–81: review differences 0–61: unresolved

Important distinction

“Not found” is not the same as “hallucinated.”

Crossref does not index every legitimate book, thesis, preprint, report, or historical publication. Treat this checker as a triage assistant and verify questionable records with a publisher, library catalogue, or discipline-specific database.
