How to tune the checker

The score is a ranking aid, not a probability that a citation is real. Start with the defaults. Raise the verified threshold when false matches are costly; lower it when citations are old, inconsistently formatted, or likely to have sparse metadata.

Likely match at 82% Higher = stricter. Records at or above this score get a green result. Review below 62% Records below this score are unresolved. The space between both thresholds is manual review. Title weight 70% Higher favors title similarity; lower gives authors and publication year more influence. Results per search More candidates can find obscure records but makes each check slower.

Default interpretation 82–100: likely match 62–81: review differences 0–61: unresolved

“Not found” is not the same as “hallucinated.”

Crossref does not index every legitimate book, thesis, preprint, report, or historical publication. Treat this checker as a triage assistant and verify questionable records with a publisher, library catalogue, or discipline-specific database.
